Subnautica

An open-world survival game that strips out weapons almost entirely and replaces them with an oxygen gauge, a sound cue you can't place, and a lot of very dark water. Eight years after full release, it's still the best argument that dread works better than a sword.

Undertale

A decade-old solo-developed RPG that redefined what a choice-driven combat system could mean, sitting at Overwhelmingly Positive across a third of a million reviews. The recurring negative review isn't a criticism of the game so much as a criticism of how impossible it is to live up to its own reputation.

Caves of Qud

Freehold Games' science-fantasy roguelike spent nine years in Steam Early Access before reaching 1.0 in December 2024, and what it built in that time is less a dungeon crawler than a character-building engine wrapped around a simulation that keeps generating outcomes nobody scripted. The reputation for impenetrability is earned. So is the one for depth.

A Short Hike

A solo-developed exploration game about climbing a mountain in Hawk Peak Provincial Park, Overwhelmingly Positive across more than 12,500 reviews for its warm, unhurried charm — with an honest, recurring value complaint about its brief length, and a smaller but real camera and controller-compatibility problem.

Bloons TD 6

One of the best-reviewed games on Steam, and the one whose critics have played it for a median of 254 hours — because the people angriest about where it's heading are the ones who never put it down.

Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling

The Paper Mario game a huge share of its own reviewers say Nintendo stopped making — turn-based RPG combat, real puzzle-solving abilities, genuine charm — built by a small independent team instead, and rarely called out for anything beyond a handful of specific, old-school JRPG design choices.

Chicory: A Colorful Tale

A top-down adventure about a self-doubting painter restoring colour to a world that's lost it, from the Wandersong and Celeste team -- Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam and still drawing new five-star reviews five years on, with one consistent, specific complaint about how the painting itself controls.

Chronigma

A free time-travel Sokoban puzzler that gets one specific, difficult idea exactly right — solving a puzzle by recording your own past actions and then working alongside the ghost of what you just did.

Creeper World 3: Arc Eternal

A tower-defense game where the enemy isn't units but a fluid — cellular automata standing in for an AI, spreading through terrain rather than pathing along it. Reviewed on its full lifetime and recent Steam review corpora, an 11-year-old cult favourite that some of its own harshest critics have played for thousands of hours.

CrossCode

An action RPG about playing an MMO, built around one verb — throwing an energy ball that ricochets off walls — that does double duty as the combat system and the language every dungeon puzzle is written in.

Database Detective: Minor Crimes Division

Solo developer Thomas Hsu's SQL-powered detective sim asks players to solve ten increasingly absurd crimes in the fictional city of Los Zorangeles by actually writing database queries, and an overwhelmingly positive review corpus — including plenty of working data professionals — praises its writing and world-building even as several reviewers flag a rough difficulty spike and thin quality-of-life tooling in the back half.

Dead Cells

Motion Twin's roguelite metroidvania turned a simple pitch — permadeath runs through a procedurally reassembled castle — into one of the best-supported action games on Steam, and it mostly still holds up now that the studio behind its five years of updates has closed the book.

Don't Starve Together

Klei's co-op survival sandbox turns Wilson's original nightmare into a shared one, where the real threat isn't the Deerclops so much as what happens when nobody on the team remembers it's coming. A decade of free content updates against 49 mostly-cosmetic DLC entries makes it a genuinely useful case study in how to monetise a survival game politely.

FTL: Faster Than Light

The spaceship-roguelike that founded a genre still sits at Overwhelmingly Positive thirteen years on, on the strength of tense real-time crew management and a legendary soundtrack — but a real, sustained minority of reviewers make a specific, well-argued case that its randomness undermines the sense of learning the game otherwise earns.

Garry's Mod

1.25 million reviews, twenty years old, still patched in 2026 — and its negative column is a museum of arguments from 2013 to 2015, while the one live complaint isn't about the game at all.

Hades II

Supergiant's first-ever sequel splits its roguelite loop into two directions instead of one, hands Melinoë a mana bar to manage on top of her dash, and asks you to keep three separate meta-progression tracks fed at once — an ambitious redesign that mostly earns its scope. It also shipped a 1.0 ending that triggered a real backlash, one Supergiant is still visibly patching a response to nine months later.

Hermit and Pig

An Earthbound-flavoured turn-based RPG about a socially anxious old man, his truffle-pig best friend, and a corporate conspiracy involving giant mushrooms — built around a genuinely novel idea where awkward conversations function as real combat encounters, and near-unanimously loved by the players who've played it.

HoloTrials: Case Covered

A free Ace Attorney-style courtroom mystery visual novel starring Hololive English's Myth and Council talents as a high-school detective drama, earning a Very Positive launch reception for its production quality and writing, with reviewers' honest caveats limited to a couple of quickly-patched launch bugs and a deep reliance on Hololive familiarity.
