Green Hell

A survival-crafting game that replaces its genre's usual menu-driven fiddling with a diegetic system — you inspect your own wounds, dig leeches out with your fingers and physically reach into your pack for a fire kit — built around a sanity mechanic that can hallucinate you to death. A separate, heavily narrative Story Mode sits alongside the open sandbox and has drawn specific, credible criticism for how it depicts the Amazon's indigenous Yabahuaca people.

Nova Lands

A pixel-art automation game that grafts Factorio-style conveyor belts onto a Forager-style hand-gathering loop. The first ten hours are genuinely charming; the back half turns into a long wait for timers to finish, and a cluster of recent reviews accuse it of bundling data collection players can't fully switch off.

Talespinner

A Japanese-mythology roguelike deckbuilder that lets you dial your own difficulty and reward up or down mid-run through a "narration" choice — reviewed on launch day, when its own review corpus is still zero and the only real evidence is a year-old public demo.

Trials of Mana

A full 3D remake of a 1995 Super Famicom classic that never got an official English release until this and a retro re-issue arrived together in 2019-2020 — faithful to the original's charm and class-change system, but missing the SNES version's local co-op and carrying writing a meaningful share of its own Steam reviews call dated.

Across the Obelisk

A four-player co-op deckbuilder that solves the genre's most obvious gap — playing Slay the Spire-style card combat as an actual shared party instead of a shared seed — and then spends the years after its Paradox acquisition undermining that achievement with DLC pricing its own community calls predatory.

Forager

The gather-craft-expand loop that launched a hundred imitators, and one of the most effective opening hours in any game of its type. It's also been abandoned since 2020 with a promised multiplayer mode that never arrived — and it still sells at full price.

Palia

A free-to-play cozy MMO that survived its own studio nearly collapsing under it — Singularity 6 laid off around 40% of its staff across 2023 and 2024 before Daybreak Game Company bought the studio outright, and the game that emerged is still being patched roughly every three to four weeks in 2026. What it hasn't fixed is a monetisation model that increasingly charges real money to actually use rewards you already earned by playing.

Trove

A voxel-building MMO welded to an ARPG loot treadmill, still running eleven years after Trion Worlds made it and three community letters a month after gamigo took over. The question in 2026 isn't whether Trove survives — it clearly does — it's how much of it is still a game and how much is a storefront.
