Grand Soul Story

A solo developer's gritty, cyberpunk-tinged JRPG throwback with a genuinely acclaimed sense of place and an original score reviewers compare to Nobuo Uematsu — undercut by a real, credibly reported game-breaking bug and a back half several players say doesn't match the strength of the opening.

Graveyard Keeper

A medieval cemetery sim with a tech tree the size of a small factory game and a sense of humour about corpse disposal. Also the only game I've reviewed where a player says they finished it out of hatred — and where the community's fix is a mod list that removes the walking.

Green Pond Town

A short, cheap point-and-click mystery from a prolific developer known for the format, praised for its cozy-eerie atmosphere and distinctive art style, held back by a widely and specifically mocked puzzle, an abrupt and unexplained ending, and text that several reviewers found hard to read in time.

Guacamelee! Gold Edition

A stylish, Mexican-folklore-inspired metroidvania beat-em-up blending combo-based combat with platforming, Very Positive across nearly 1,900 reviews for its art, music and humour — undercut by an extremely consistent complaint that late-game difficulty spikes demand near-perfect execution, imprecise controls especially on keyboard, and a well-corroborated recommendation to buy the separately sold Super Turbo Championship Edition instead of this specific version.

halfmoon

A short, atmospheric point-and-click visual novel from solo artist-developer lvl374, casting players as a new employee at an information center that processes souls before they move on, Very Positive across 84 English reviews for its striking 1-bit art and contemplative writing about life and death — with a widely repeated complaint that its roughly 30-to-60-minute runtime leaves the story feeling like a brief exhibition rather than a full experience.

Hand of Fate

A genuinely inventive hybrid of deckbuilding, tarot-card dungeon crawling and real-time action combat, Very Positive across more than 3,200 reviews for its distinctive tabletop presentation — undercut by an extraordinarily consistent complaint that the real-time combat is clunky and shallow, and a separate, well-corroborated complaint that random-event outcomes skew punishingly against the player as runs progress.

Harold Halibut

A decade in the making, Slow Bros.' stop-motion narrative adventure hand-crafts every character, room and prop as a physical model before scanning it into the game — an unprecedented, genuinely unique visual achievement that critics and players alike say comes at the cost of almost any actual gameplay, with fetch-quest tasks and long, repetitive backtracking that a real and vocal share of both audiences found tedious well before the ten-to-fifteen-hour story concludes.

Hyper Light Drifter

A gorgeous, wordless action RPG whose stunning pixel art and haunting score are close to universally praised across more than 15,000 reviews — and whose combat, storytelling and accessibility choices divide even players who clearly wanted to love it, in remarkably similar language across a full decade.

Idle Chapel

A budget dark-fantasy clicker where you tap cultists back into worshipers with a cross, told across twelve moody pixel-art areas — handsome and short enough not to overstay its welcome, but dogged by accusations that its loop is a close reskin of another incremental.

Ikenfell

A visibly heartfelt tactical RPG about a magic school and its queer cast of students, whose own negative reviews are unusually full of apology — reviewer after reviewer explaining they wanted to love it before explaining, in detail, why tedious combat pacing stopped them.

Incremental Adventures

A free idle RPG where automated heroes grind an endless dungeon and three stacked prestige layers turn the numbers exponential — sharp and generous early on, then quietly hollowed out by the same "just maximise damage" problem that hits most of the genre.

ISLANDERS

A minimalist, procedurally generated building-placement puzzle game marketed as a relaxing city builder, Overwhelmingly Positive across more than 10,200 reviews for its charming presentation — undercut by an extremely consistent complaint that it isn't really a city builder at all, but a short, score-based placement puzzle with no simulated citizens, thin content, and real frustration from procedural generation that can produce unplayable island layouts.

Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance TD

A competent, familiar entry in a fifteen-year-old tower defense franchise that still lands well with newcomers, while a genuine and specific chorus of long-time fans call it the weakest Kingdom Rush yet — too short at full price, too reliant on paid campaign DLC, and too close to a decade of prior instalments to feel like real evolution.

Lazy Galaxy 2

A stylish, microtransaction-free idle game about building an alien empire and clicking asteroids -- genuinely loved for its writing and its refusal to nickel-and-dime, and just as consistently criticised for running out of new things to do long before players run out of interest.

LISA: The Painful

A darkly comic, deliberately punishing post-apocalyptic RPG following a broken man raising the last girl alive, Overwhelmingly Positive across more than 10,000 reviews for its singular tone and emotional weight — currently divided by a July 2023 "Definitive Edition" that replaced the original by default, altering content to secure console approval, introducing new bugs, and raising the price, changes a large, concentrated wave of longtime fans directly criticise.
