The short version

Train stats, cast spells, feed a minion, fish, craft gems, raise demons, fight bosses — an idle RPG with a genuinely large skill tree, made by one person and given away free. Its most committed players have four- and five-figure hour counts, and the top positive review comes from someone with **6,454 hours** who specifically praises the developer for being "even handed with the $ currency so you don't really need to spend money."

Two things hold it back and one accusation doesn't stick. It demands far more attention than "idle" implies — several features need the game running to progress at all — and the interface is the single most common complaint. But the claim that it's abandoned is simply wrong: Update 161 landed on 20 July 2026.

Biggest strengths

  • Free, with optional purchases that long-term players say are easy to avoid
  • Enormous long-term depth — skills, crafting, fishing, classes, bosses, demons
  • Still actively developed after seven years, with seasonal events and 161 numbered updates

Biggest weaknesses

  • The interface is the most-cited complaint and does little to explain itself
  • Several systems require the game to be running, which undercuts the idle premise
  • Early progression is slow enough that many reviewers bounce off in the first hours

Who it's for: Idle-RPG players who want years of depth rather than an evening of numbers, and who don't mind an ugly, unexplained interface. If you liked NGU Idle or Idling to Rule the Gods, this is aimed squarely at you.

Our recommendation: Install it — it's free, it's deep, and the monetisation genuinely won't pressure you. Expect to consult the community for the first few hours, and expect to leave it running more than a true idle game should need.

7.5 / 10

A five-vote negative review from December 2024, written by someone with 6,860 hours in the game, opens: "The game is abandoned."

It isn't. Since that review was posted, Oni Gaming has shipped Update 155 (Christmas 2024), 156 (Easter 2025), 157 (Summer), 158 (Spooky), 159 (Christmas), 160 (Easter 2026) and Update 161 on 20 July 2026 — two weeks before this review. The announcement history runs to 161 numbered updates across seven years, on a seasonal cadence, from one developer, on a game that costs nothing.

That reviewer's other point — that a late-game arena mode has been broken for years, with reports going back two years before theirs — I can't verify from outside the game, and I'm not going to assert it either way. But "abandoned" is checkable, and it's wrong. This is why the announcement feed gets read every time.

What it is

An idle RPG with an unusually wide skill tree for the genre: you train stats, cast spells, feed and level a minion, fish, craft gems, raise demons, unlock classes and grind bosses. It is closest in spirit to NGU Idle and Idling to Rule the Gods — several reviewers name both — and it shares their defining quality: the systems keep unfolding for hundreds of hours.

The playtimes are extraordinary even by idle standards. Among the most-upvoted positive reviews: 6,454 hours, 3,693 hours, 1,870 hours, and one at 24,059 hours. A 30-vote reviewer captures the appeal: "Not a '4 button game that becomes repetitive very fast'. Has some depth in it and you're able to keep unlocking features, even late in middle/late game."

The monetisation, which is the good news

This library pays close attention to how free games take money, because that's where readers get burned. Here the finding is unusually positive.

Across all 64 English negative reviews, pay-related terms are scarce: pay in 4, microtransaction in 3, in-app purchases in 5, and pay-to-win in none at all. The most-upvoted positive review in the game's history, from that 6,454-hour player, is explicitly about it: "The dev is even handed with the $ currency so you don't really need to spend money unless you want to, and can easily in a few days get the currency to buy what you want without spending a pen[ny]."

A free idle RPG where the premium currency is earnable in a few days of normal play, and where the people with thousands of hours are the ones defending the model, is a genuinely good outcome. Monetisation scores an 8.5.

The two real problems

The interface. This is the most common complaint by a clear margin — UI in 11 of 64 negatives, plus interface in 3, confusing in 4 and tutorial in 4. A 615-hour reviewer, who admits an "inability to stop playing", still marks it down: it "loves having things 'level up' without actually providing any benefit as far as the interface's feedback is concerned." A game this deep that explains itself this poorly is asking you to go and find a community guide, and many reviewers did. Interface scores a 4.5.

It isn't very idle. A 8,941-hour player puts the objection precisely: "Too many things require game to run 24/7 for progress. An idle game shouldn't be like that. Even towards the end game you think, smooth sailing now, but then they introduce a new feature that doesn't work offline."

That's now the third idle game I've assessed today with a version of this complaint, alongside Fish to Dish and Kiwi Clicker. It seems to be a genre-wide temptation: offline progress is the promise, and uptime requirements are the easiest way to stretch a curve.

The related early-game issue is pace. The most-upvoted negative of all, from launch week 2019, calls it "WAAAAYY slower progress" than its obvious peers, and a 2025 reviewer with 33 hours writes that "the only reason it takes forever to get anywhere is because you're forced to do the same boring chores over and over again."

Where it's heading

One number gives pause: lifetime English sentiment is 89.9%, but recent English reviews run 79 of 100 positive. Negatives by year go 16, 11, 8, 7, 0, 5, 12, 5 — with 2025 the second-worst year on record.

That's a softening rather than a collapse, and it may simply be a seven-year-old game meeting players with newer expectations. Worth knowing, not worth panicking about — and the developer is also now working on other incremental projects, which the update cadence suggests hasn't yet cost this one.

The verdict

Wizard And Minion Idle earns a 7.5. It is free, enormously deep, honestly monetised, and still receiving seasonal updates seven years on from a solo developer — a combination this genre rarely manages.

It falls short of an 8 because the interface actively obstructs a game that would otherwise be welcoming, because too much of it requires the client to be running, and because its recent reception is meaningfully cooler than its lifetime badge suggests.

Install it, budget an hour of confusion, and find a community guide early. If it takes, you may not be finished with it for a very long time — some people here are measuring in years.
