A Touhou-Themed Take on the Desktop Mate Formula
Touhou Desktop Pet does exactly what its title promises: it drops a small, animated Touhou Project character onto your desktop, where she'll follow your cursor with her eyes, get dragged around by the mouse, and generally sit there being cute while you work or browse. The genre isn't new — "Desktop Mate," the game this one is repeatedly compared to in its own review section, popularized the format — but TouhouFans, working solo or in a very small team, has built a version aimed squarely at the enormous, devoted Touhou fandom rather than at a generic virtual-companion audience. At launch, the roster consists of a single fully detailed character, Reimu Hakurei, the shrine maiden protagonist of the Touhou Project series, with reviewers already speculating about who might join her — one review simply reads "ehehe, can't wait for sanae," referring to another popular character from the series.
Mechanically, the pitch is deliberately small: gaze tracking that follows the mouse, left-click-and-drag repositioning, scroll-to-resize while holding the mouse button, touch-screen support, and the ability to load custom characters from VRM model files, the same format used by a wide swath of the VTuber and avatar community. There's no story, no objectives, and no traditional win state — it's a piece of desktop décor with a Touhou skin, priced at $0.99 to match that scope.
A Thin but Enthusiastic English-Language Reception
At the time of writing, Touhou Desktop Pet had accumulated 61 user reviews and a 100% positive rating on Steam, comfortably enough to be labeled "Very Positive." That headline number needs a significant caveat, though: only 13 of those 61 reviews are written in English. The bulk of the review pool — 37 reviews — is in Simplified Chinese, with smaller clusters in Russian, Japanese, Korean, and other languages. That distribution reflects the genuinely global, heavily Chinese-speaking base of the Touhou Project fandom more than it reflects any English-market breakout, and it means this review leans on a genuinely thin, if unanimously positive, slice of the total feedback. Every one of the 13 English-language reviews found at review time is a positive one, several of them just a few words long ("love it," "this is amazing," "the greatest game of all time"), which tracks with the low-stakes, low-friction nature of what's being reviewed: a cheap desktop toy rarely inspires long, critical essays either way.
One of the more substantive English notes flags a real, if narrow, concern: a reviewer with over 5,000 minutes of recorded playtime — meaning the pet was likely left running in the background for extended stretches — reported that the software "makes my pc freeze every few seconds" on their system, even while still recommending it. That's the kind of background-resource complaint worth taking seriously for an app explicitly designed to run continuously alongside whatever else you're doing on your PC.
Mouse-Driven Interaction and Workshop Support Do the Heavy Lifting
What little interactive depth Touhou Desktop Pet has comes from two places: the moment-to-moment mouse-driven animation responses, and its Steam Workshop integration for custom VRM characters. Reviewers describe the gaze-tracking and drag physics as convincingly cute rather than stiff, and the developer has already been shipping small polish patches since launch — one addressing Reimu's face turning semi-transparent during certain animations, another fixing custom Workshop characters that weren't loading correctly, plus assorted clipping and settings-persistence fixes. That's a reasonably attentive patch cadence for a $0.99 release in its first month.
The Workshop angle is arguably the more interesting long-term hook: because the pet system reads standard VRM files, the ceiling on available characters isn't limited to whatever TouhouFans ships officially, but to whatever the broader VRM-modeling community uploads. One reviewer specifically praised the software for being "very cute" and hoped the Workshop would gain more content over time, and pointed newer users toward the in-app Community Center as the place to browse it — a sign the feature works but isn't yet self-explanatory to first-time users. Steam Achievements are also included as a free bonus layer on top of what is otherwise a non-competitive, ambient piece of software.
A Charming Toy, Not a Deep Simulation
It's worth being upfront about what this release is not. With a single detailed character available at launch, no story content, no progression system beyond unlocking achievements, and gameplay limited to positioning and resizing a sprite that reacts to your cursor, Touhou Desktop Pet sits closer to a licensed screensaver or a novelty widget than to a simulation game in any traditional sense. That's not a knock on the execution — reviewers clearly enjoy it for exactly what it is — but anyone expecting Touhou-flavored gameplay, combat, or even the light management systems found in comparable desktop-companion titles will be disappointed. The appeal here is almost entirely aesthetic and nostalgic: a beloved character rendered charmingly, sitting on your desktop, for less than the price of a coffee.
Verdict
Touhou Desktop Pet is a small, inexpensive, and — going by its currently thin English-language review pool — genuinely well-liked piece of desktop décor for Touhou Project fans, built on the same "desktop mate" formula popularized elsewhere but reskinned with a character the target audience already loves. The developer's early patch cadence and VRM/Workshop support for custom characters suggest room to grow past its one-character launch lineup, and the reported PC freezing on at least one long-session system is worth watching if you plan to leave it running for hours at a time. At under a dollar, it's a low-risk pickup for anyone who wants Reimu Hakurei watching over their desktop — just don't mistake it for anything more ambitious than that.
