A combat encounter with monsters in the Mire

Combat

Every fight in Wanderer is your three combat skills and your gear against whatever the road sent. Here's exactly how that works.

The three skills

  • Attack decides how often your swings land — and gates which weapons you can use at full strength.
  • Strength decides how hard a landed swing hits.
  • Defence decides how well you shrug off incoming blows — and gates armour.

All three train through fighting. If you feel flimsy, check which of the three is lagging: a wanderer with big Strength and no Defence wins fast or dies fast.

The loop

Combat runs in rounds: you strike, they strike, until one side runs out of hit points. Your weapon sets your damage range, your armour blunts theirs. The whole exchange plays out on the map — your wanderer squares up against the creature, blows land, damage numbers fly, and the health bars over both fighters tell the story round by round. Between fights your HP recovers as you travel, faster on safe ground.

Monster levels

Every creature shows its level next to its name, colour-coded against your own strength — take the warning colours seriously. Monster level tracks distance along the road, so the country itself tells you what you're in for: if the local wildlife is ten levels above you, you've walked ahead of your build. Each region page in the World Atlas lists what hunts there.

Hunt mode

Travel modes change how willing your wanderer is to fight. Explore fights what finds it; Hunt actively seeks monsters out, making it the fastest way to train combat skills when that's the point of the session. If you'd rather not fight at all, Return and Rest keep you on safe ground. The movement modes guide compares all eight.

Bosses and mini-bosses

Each region has a named boss laired off the road — visibly bigger, visibly meaner, and worth the trouble. Rarer roaming mini-bosses (marked with ◆) sit between ordinary monsters and bosses: tougher fights with better-than-usual rewards. Boss wins are the road's milestone moments, and their drops are usually the best gear in their region.

When you lose

Defeat knocks you out of the fight and back to safety to recover. You keep your equipment and your progress — the cost is time and the walk back. There is no gear loss and no permadeath; the road is patient with its travellers. The after-defeat guide covers recovery in detail, including why unlocking towns as you pass them makes losing cheaper.

Getting stronger, practically

  1. Fight at or slightly above your level — grey-easy fights train slowly.
  2. Keep all six gear slots filled; an empty slot is free damage taken.
  3. Upgrade your weapon first, then armour.
  4. If a region stalls you, mine and smith for a session — gear jumps beat grinding.

Common mistakes

  • Training into the warning colours. Fighting far above your level loses more time to defeats than it gains in XP. Slightly above is the sweet spot.
  • All weapon, no armour. Defence and hit points decide whether long sessions (and offline sessions) hold up. Away fights especially lean on Defence, since you're not there to be careful.
  • Skipping mini-bosses. The ◆ fights pay better than their difficulty suggests once your gear is current for the region.
  • Grinding a wall instead of re-gearing. If a region stops you, the answer is nearly always at the forge, not in one more lap of the same fights.

FAQ

Can I dodge or use abilities mid-fight?

No — Wanderer's fights resolve from your skills and gear, not reflexes. Your decisions happen before the fight: where you walk, what you wear, which mode you set.

Do I fight other players?

No. Other wanderers on the road are fellow travellers — there is no PvP. Competition happens on the leaderboards.

Does fighting happen while I'm offline?

Yes — if your offline mode has you travelling in wild country, encounters resolve with the same rules and bank the same rewards. See offline progress.

What's the strongest early upgrade?

A current-tier weapon. Damage shortens fights, and shorter fights mean less damage taken — it compounds.

Do bosses respawn?

Yes. A beaten boss returns to its lair in time, so a good boss is a renewable source of its loot table.
