Wanderer's Rest castle, where defeated travellers return

After a Defeat

Everyone loses on the Long Road — to a fen you pushed too deep, a boss you met too early, a fight you tabbed away from. Here's exactly what it costs, and the smart way back.

What defeat actually costs

When your hit points reach zero you're knocked down and revived at the nearest town you've unlocked. That's the entire bill:

  • You keep every item — worn gear, pack contents, coins. Nothing drops, nothing is damaged, nothing is stolen.
  • You keep all XP and skills. No experience penalty of any kind.
  • You lose position — the walk back is the cost — plus a short recovery on the ground if it happens while you're away.

This is deliberate design: Wanderer wants you probing east past your comfort zone, and you can't design for boldness while confiscating swords.

Why unlocked towns matter

"Nearest town you've unlocked" is the key phrase. Every settlement you discover becomes a revival anchor — so deep pushes get cheaper the more of the map you've touched. A defeat in Blackfen with Gravewater unlocked costs a minute; the same defeat with nothing unlocked past Stonewatch costs a hike. When you enter a new region, making its town your first stop is the single best insurance you can buy, and it's free.

Defeats while you're away

Offline play uses the same rules: if your wanderer loses a fight overnight they revive at the nearest unlocked town, lie recovering briefly, and carry on with their orders. The return summary counts battles lost, so you'll always know. An offline mode that keeps losing is the game telling you the region is too deep for unattended play — hunt it live, or set the offline mode a region back.

The smart way back

  1. Heal first. You revive in a safe zone — Rest mode tops you up quickly, and standing in town costs nothing.
  2. Diagnose. Was it depth (a region above your band), density (too many fights without recovery), or one specific brute? The Atlas level bands settle the depth question.
  3. Adjust one thing. Temper or upgrade a slot, shift your combat focus toward Defence, or aim the return trip one region west of where you fell.
  4. Use the scroll. If you banked a teleport scroll (1,000 coins at the Rest store), you can jump straight back to the frontier town nearest your fall instead of walking.

Reading a repeated defeat

One loss is luck. Three losses in the same stretch is information: check the region's level band against yours, check your gear's effectiveness percentages (under-level gear works at reduced power — the character panel shows it), and check that your body/legs slots aren't lagging tiers behind your weapon. Defence catches up fast when you focus it.

FAQ

Can other players loot me when I fall?

No. There's no PvP and no player looting — your defeat is between you and the monster.

Do bosses punish defeat extra?

No — same rules. Bosses just make the walk back more likely.

Does dying reset my furthest-east record?

Never. The record is a high-water mark; defeat can't touch it.
