Six distinct pixel-art castles built for six Wanderer regions

Shipped 7–8 July 2026.

Castles are promises. A road with a castle on it says: people held this line, someone thought this ground was worth stone. Wanderer's old citadels didn't say much of anything — flat sprites from the early days, parked beside towns like scenery flats. This month they were retired, and six real castles took their places along the road.

One kit, six characters

The castles are built from a shared architectural kit — walls, towers, keeps, gates, banners — stamped in six regional styles, so they rhyme without repeating:

  • Wanderer's Rest raised the first: a royal castle ward at the heart of the home basin, the way a capital should greet a newcomer.
  • Five more anchor the road east, each dressed in its region's materials and mood — the frontier's grim stone reads nothing like the home ward's banners, and it shouldn't.

The satisfying part came last: castles were pulled up to the roads and set into their towns' walls, rather than floating beside them. A castle you walk past on the road, whose gatehouse is part of the town's own defences, feels inhabited — it's the difference between a landmark and a backdrop.

The invisible-castle incident

An honest note for the changelog connoisseurs: for a short window after the first deploy, the new castles were invisible — the building atlas needed rebaking with the six-style set, and until it was, players walked through phantom fortifications. It was fixed within the day, and it's a tidy example of the pipeline lesson we keep re-learning: art that's generated by recipe is also deployed by recipe, and both halves have to ship together.

Part of a bigger pass

The castles are one movement in a longer campaign to give every settlement real defensive character: bespoke town walls are rolling out town by town (thirteen of twenty-eight done as this posts), and the flat market buildings are being rebuilt with dimensional art, starting at the Rest. The road is old; it's finally starting to look like people have been defending it all along.
