WayForward's faithful reimagining of the original 1987 Contra earns genuine affection from longtime fans for capturing the series' run-and-gun feel, but is dogged by two remarkably consistent complaints across its own review base — no online co-op despite marketing built around multiplayer, and a short arcade-length campaign priced closer to a full-scope modern release.

WayForward turns Atari's 1982 classic Yar's Revenge into a metroidvania starring hacker Emi Kimura, pairing genuinely inventive shoot-em-up hacking minigames with vibrant art and voice acting — undercut, by near-unanimous agreement among both critics and players, by dialogue widely described as painfully unfunny, and a metroidvania structure with much of its exploration and secret-finding stripped out.
