A bigger, better-automated sequel to Kalypso's railroad tycoon sim that streamlines track and signal building, but draws a real, sustained split among returning fans over whether that automation is a genuine improvement or a simplification of what made the original work.

Railway Empire asks players to build 19th-century rail networks feeding growing cities and competing against aggressive AI rivals, and the economic puzzle underneath that pitch is genuinely engaging by most accounts. Its own reviewers are unusually unanimous, though, that the actual act of laying track and signals — the one thing a railway game absolutely cannot get wrong — is executed badly enough to undermine the whole experience.
